- Began his career in 1997 with the Indianapolis Police Department and retired as IMPD's Southwest District Commander to accept the Lawrence Chief of Police post
- Chief Hofmann is a 1992 graduate of Indiana University, holds a Graduate Certificate from the University of Virginia, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Public Safety at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
- He is a graduate of the 250th FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, and the IMPD Leadership Academy, 2010-01
- He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Indiana Association of Chief of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates
